H.O.M.E.

H.O.M.E., or Household Omnipotent Management Easily, is a project that aims for full remote home automation via the Internet.

Introduction:

Being a nerd, I'm always looking for more ways to intergrate electronics into my life. I made a watch that can control a couple outlets, but I want to bring that a step further. My plan is to create a network of nodes throughout the house that can relay information to the main HOME hub, and from there be read via the web. Using the web interface, this also means that I can control various appliances.

Features:

The first thing I need to do before building is make a list of the features I want. The list below will be added to.

Internet Connectivity- HOME needs to be able to be accessed via the internet. A variety of functions can then be controlled even when away from the house

Multi-room Control- The system is useless if it can only be used in one specific room. It needs to have a variety of nodes in order to control the entire house.

Powerline Support- While the nodes may be wireless in order to communicate to the main hub, controlling various appliances remotely is a difficult task. By sending commands via poweline, switching appliances will be much easier.

Motion Sensor- This can be used for a variety of functions, such as part of a security system, detecting motion when nobody is home. Another use is for convenience, for instance, if it is dark in a room (lets say its at night), and the door opens, the system can turn on the lights for a set period of time. No more stubbing toes on the way to the bathroom!

Snail Mail Notifier- My old apartment was in a complex, and of the many downsides, one I sought to fix was checking my mailbox. I was literally on the opposite side of the building, and my parking lot was nowhere near the box, so I'd usually just forget to check my mail. HOME will remedy that. By detecting when the box is opened, I can receive notifications via text message, or audio from the HUB.

Microsoft Kinect Support- This can be used for a range of applications, from detecting who is home, and changing settings based on that user's preference, or by using voice commands, such as asking if there is any mail, or when the front door was last opened.
